The Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1966, Ref. 1680 includes the Date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The Infamous Red Submariner is also a Ref. 1680 which had the word “Submariner” in red lettering, manufactured from 1966-1973. This watch is an example of what is referred to as the “White Dial.” It is the first Ref. 1680 with the word “Submariner” in white lettering.
It’s no longer a secret that Gold Rolex Sports models had low production numbers, are coveted by collectors, and are hard to find in worthwhile condition. Which has made them all the more exciting to discover when a good example pops up. This ref. 1680 checks all the boxes of what you should expect out of a quality 18k yellow Gold Rolex Submariner, from its beautiful case to its exceptional dial.
|Dial||Matte Black “Nipple”|
|Bracelet||2pc Handmade Leather Strap|
CASE & Bracelet
The 18K yellow Gold case is in very impressive condition, displaying symmetrical and full-bodied lugs and crown guards that have only seen minimal polishing and retain slight chamfers. The original “fat font” bezel insert is in excellent condition, remaining deep Black with a slight fade in the Gold coloration of the numerals. The case retains its original yellow gold tip-lock crown. The case hallmarks remain deep and crisp. The serial and reference numbers remain legible and clear between the lugs. The watch will come supplied on a 2pc handmade Leather strap.
DIAL & HANDS
The matte Black dial is in near flawless condition showing no real signs of age and vibrant gold text. The tritium lume plots have aged to an excellent golden patina and exhibit no degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The tritium hands are believed to be later 70s service replacements based on lume texture and tritium consistency, matching the overall aesthetic of the watch nicely. The metallic gold Date wheel is era correct with open 6’s and 9’s.
None. The watch was recently serviced and is running at COSC spec. backed by a 1-year warranty on accurate timekeeping.
