1960s Benrus Ultra-Deep Super-Compressor (Ref. 6089) “Pumpkin”

 

Patented in 1956 by Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA), the SuperCompressor case possessed a unique sealing system that set it apart from Other Dive watch cases of the day. When exposed to higher water pressure, the spring-loaded case back of the SuperCompressor case sealed even tighter. AnOther innovation with the SuperCompressor was its approach to securing the bezel. As most diving watch timing bezels of the era rotated outside the case, the Super Compressor’s timing bezel rotated internally and was operated externally through a secondary crown, giving the SuperCompressor case its distinctive twin crown appearance. While not the best innovation in practice (due to the difficulty of manipulating a crown with diving gloves), the SuperCompressor case gained popularity. Dozens of Other brands released dive watches with SuperCompressor cases, the most notable being Jaeger-lecoultre, Enicar, Universal Genève, and Iwc, Benrus, and Longines.

CASE & Bracelet

The case appears to have been minimally polished in the past, remaining very strong with visible chamfers and light, honest signs of use. The case retains its original twin cross-hatched crowns. The case retains its original crystal that features an integrated Date cyclops and shows light signs of use around its edges. The case back displays all of its original factory markings though they are light from wear. The watch will come supplied on a 2pc tropic rubber strap.

DIAL & HANDS

The matte Black dial is in excellent vintage condition, showing some light marks and hand drag towards the center of the dial. The inner rotating bezel shows some age and matches the dial patina perfectly, under U.V. light inspection the “0” in 30 shows some light degradation the rest of the lume on the inner bezel remains fully intact. The tritium lume plots on the dial have aged to a gorgeous and vibrant pumpkin patina and exhibit no degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The original hands have been professionally restored with tritium to match the dial.
